In my senior year of high school, I changed the spelling of my name from Sandy to Sandi. (Since my legal name was Sandra, it was no big deal.) But the reason behind the name change was a big deal. I gave my life to Christ. The name change was my way of reminding myself that I am not who I was.
“When a woman who had lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was in the house….she wet Jesus’ feet with her tears. Then wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.”
Luke 7:37-38
What a demonstration of love and gratitude! Her name is not given in Scripture. She is only referenced by her sins. That is how the town knew her. But to Jesus, she was more than her mistakes. Jesus described her as one who had been forgiven and loved very much.
The same is true for you. You are not who you were. Jesus has given you a new name: forgiven.
